Online Accounting Software

Desktop accounting software and online accounting software hosted in the cloud are different. Do you know what the major differences are between online accounting software and desktop accounting software?

Before making any change in accounting software, small businesses must evaluate what the differences are between each choice. In general, the differences between online accounting software and desktop accounting software are:

  • Online accounting software allows you to log in from anywhere, at any time, and with any device with an internet connection.
  • Online accounting software allows multiple users from different location to work on the same data at the same time.
  • Desktop accounting software allows you to operate multiple companies with one user license.
  • Desktop accounting software is more powerful, with greater functionality; online accounting software typically requires “workaround” procedures or third-party add-on tools to achieve the same functionality.

Most of the time online accounting software will not do everything you want it to (e.g., inventory, tax reporting, etc.; however, if you setup all the appropriate third party add-on tools with your online accounting software, you may be able to achieve the same functionality as a desktop accounting software and gain the mobility that online access offers.
